Barbie, all the Sparkle

At the end of July, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie hit theatres around the world. The impact this film currently has on the cultural zeitgeist and aesthetics is hard to overstate. The production team took the role of the titular character as a fashion icon to heart and created some outstanding looks for Margot Robbie as Barbie. Unsurprisingly jewellery played a key part in completing these ensembles. Theodore & C. takes a look at some of our favourite pieces from the movie, that has become a source of inspiration for so many trends this summer.

At the very beginning of the movie, Barbie is wearing a gorgeous set of earrings and a necklace with white and pink flowers. This simple but noticeable jewellery acts as a perfect representation of what one would imagine a real-life doll to wear while avoiding being cartoonish or too gaudy.

The playful and whimsical feel is continued with the next set of necklace and earrings featuring large pink seashells which Barbie fittingly wears to the beach.

Skipping forward a little bit, to when Barbie finds herself in the Real World and dons her already iconic pink cowboy outfit, we see her wear slightly edgier (very slightly) jewellery – rhinestone star earrings with tassels that match her star-embellished suit.

Undoubtedly the piece de resistance of the jewellery selection from the movie was Chanel's Spring/Summer 1995 necklace, which Barbie wore when she went to agree to be Ken’s ‘long-term long-distance low-commitment casual girlfriend’. What Marie Clare UK described as ‘the couture recreation of the faux costume jewellery, we'd wear as kids’, the necklace features a pearl chain with Chanel logo charms and colourful gemstones. For the movie, the costume department added a tennis ball-sized pink stone at the centre of the necklace upping the visual impact even further.
